Chic-fil-A

Last night I was gonna cook but we had 2 doctor appointments that day and a 4-H meeting and I procrastinated.

So we got out of 4-H at 7:30 and I had a splitting headache and . . . and . . . and Chic-fil-A was on the way home.

Although they don't really advertise it, Chic-Fil-A is a great place to get safe food. Their fries and hashbrowns are gluten-free and fried in dedicated friers - not the ones the chicken are fried in. They have the chargrill chicken that is gluten-free and is good on the salads - I LOVE the chicken and fruit salad. They also do the kids meals with the chargrill (although it isn't on the menu, you have to ask).

So the kids and I went in to place our order, they were not really crowded and by the time we had figured out our order, we were the only ones ordering. So I ask for the kids meals with chargrill and she asks "Do you want the sandwich, nuggets or tenders?"

I tell her the kids can't have bread so she asks if they want strips, nuggets or patty. With no breading. I was completely shocked because we have eaten there several times and I had no idea there were several options for the gluten-free kids meals. I thought it was just the one large patty. So they got grilled chicken nuggets.

I got the chargrilled chicken and fruit salad - which comes gluten-free no special ordering for it.

I ordered hubby one of the chargrilled sandwiches (he needs to be gf but he won't admit it yet) and she asked if we wanted the bread off of that too so it would be gf.

While we waited for our order she conversed with my 6 year old while he told her all the things he was planning on inventing (a jet pack, a gun that helps you fly etc).

When we got home, we enjoyed our meal while I told Hubby how amazingly helpful she was.

I noticed that instead of the usual crouton pack and sunflower seed pack - both of which have wheat - she put in a granola pack that had no wheat. Now the oats weren't gf so I still couldn't eat it but I was still very impressed - I didn't say gluten-free or wheat-free and really probably the only ones that know the difference are the ones that have to know the difference.

In fact, I think I am going to call the owner/manager of the Chic-Fil-A and let them know how impressed I am.

By the way, as dictated by FTC laws, I have to tell you that I paid for our meal, I didn't get anything free except ketchup packets and straws and napkins. I am not being given anything for posting this review.

  1. This is great to here! Our family loves Chic Fil A. My oldest daughter had me look online to see what GF items they had. She was excited to know that she could keep eating there!

Sourdough Herb Boule

Sometimes when developing recipes, it has to be tried several times and tweaked. Other times it just all falls into place but you never quite know which way it will go. A few weeks ago, Living Without sent a newsletter with a recipe for a sourdough bread and we had been wanting a sourdough. Yum. So I called Daisy in to help me mix up the starter, mainly so she could see that it wasn't a big deal. It isn't a long complicated thing, it just takes a few days. Four days later we had a loaf of sourdough bread with supper and Daisy took one bite and said "contest bread!" We had been experimenting with some yeast bread and had pretty much picked one out but once she tried the sourdough, she loved it. I had seen a beautiful round loaf on Pinterest that had herbs baked onto the bread crust as decoration. Daisy and I thought it looked beautiful and since the judges won't actually taste the food (worries of food poisoning), it needs to look as good as possible.

Shepherdless Pie

This is one of the easiest, quickest throw-togethers. The hardest part is the mashed potatoes and if you aren't doing dairy-free then you can pick up mashed potatoes at the local fried chicken place. This is something I have been making for years - although not often because Hubby is less than thrilled with vegetarian meals. Normally I do add the cheese and have buttery potatoes but that doesn't fit in with the dairy-free. Sheperdless Pie

White and Dark Chocolate Dacquoise part 2

The meringue is the persnickety part of the whole thing. Or at least the most persnickety. If you missed part one click right here Next comes the buttercream but it isn't the sugary sweet stuff on the store cakes. Ok. If I am honest it is still plenty rich though. This is with the white chocolate but you get the idea Using a double boiler you melt 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate and 2 ounces of unsweetened chocolate. If you have never done a double boiler, you place a bowl over a saucepan with an inch or two of boiling water but be sure the bowl doesn't touch the water. I like covering the bowl with cling wrap to be sure that no water droplets get in the chocolate so it doesn't seize. It will take about 8 minutes. You then remove that bowl from the heat and put on one with 8 ounces of white chocolate and let it melt for 8 minutes. The dark chocolate will need stirring to make it look melted and then after the while chocolate is done, you stir it as well. While t
